Department of Community Medicine

Established in 2009, the Department of Community Medicine focuses on developing effective healthcare delivery models and training medical students to excel as Primary Care Physicians, researchers, and public health professionals. The department was founded under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Beeva Baruah, with Prof. (Dr.) Bishnu Ram Das taking over as Head of Department in January 2014. Currently, it has 13 faculty members, including a Statistician cum Assistant Professor.

The MD programme in Community Medicine commenced in 2013, offering three postgraduate seats per year. The department also plays a crucial role in undergraduate medical education, providing structured training to MBBS students and interns during their postings at Rural and Urban Health Training Centres. Additionally, it is actively involved in training paramedical workers and educating the general public.

Community Health Services

The department delivers primary healthcare to rural and urban populations, including urban slums and remote areas, through:

  • Rural Health Training Centre (Titabor)
  • Urban Health Centre
  • Satellite health services for Tea Garden communities in Jorhat district

It organizes health camps, training programs, and supervises national health initiatives to improve community well-being.

Research and Development

The department has made significant contributions to research and development, focusing on public health advancements and evidence-based healthcare practices.

COVID-19 Training Initiatives

As per Government instructions, the Community Medicine Department coordinated and organized COVID-19 training in collaboration with resource persons from different departments of Jorhat Medical College (JMC) to train all faculty, nurses, staff (Grade 3 & 4), laboratory technicians, cleaners of JMC, and Nodal Officers from Jorhat, Golaghat, Majuli, and Sibsagar districts. The training covered:

  • COVID-19 Epidemiology and Overview of Waves
  • Newer COVID Strains
  • COVID Vaccine
  • Infection Prevention and Control
  • Double Masking
  • Triaging and Management of COVID-19 Patients
  • Revised Discharge Policy
  • Dead Body Management
  • Training Period: 5th May 2021 – 15th May 2021

The Community Medicine Department also coordinated ICU management training for:

  • All Clinical Faculty, PGTs, Interns, Nurses, ICU Technicians of JMC
  • Doctors, Nurses, and ICU Technicians from Jorhat, Golaghat, Majuli, and Sibsagar districts (May 2021)

Additionally, the department conducted COVID-19 training for newly recruited Medical Officers (MBBS) under a one-year Compulsory Rural Posting (contractual basis) at JMCH on 3rd June 2021.
