DEPARTMENT OF FORENSIC MEDICINE

Welcome to the official page of the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology at Jorhat Medical College & Hospital, Jorhat, Assam. Established on October 12, 2009, the department began its journey with the appointment of Dr. Himangshu Das as Assistant Professor. In 2011, Dr. Kanak Chandra Das took over as Professor and Head, serving until 2020. Since January 2023, the department has been led by Professor Dipak Kumar Das.

Over the years, the department has grown significantly and currently comprises seven faculty members, along with two postgraduate trainees admitted annually since 2014. The department boasts well-equipped undergraduate and postgraduate laboratories, supported by laboratory technicians, laboratory assistants, and office staff. In addition to imparting education to MBBS Phase II and Phase III Part-I undergraduate students, the department actively engages in postgraduate integrated seminars, lectures, and workshops in collaboration with other departments. Furthermore, our faculty members contribute to various training programs and lectures at the Police Training Centre, Dergaon.

The department plays a crucial role in providing medico-legal services across all specialties of the hospital. Our services include routine post-mortem examinations, sexual assault case evaluations, age estimation, embalming, toxicological sample collection, and DNA sample collection during routine duty hours from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Additionally, with the necessary permissions, our department offers medico-legal services during night hours for law and order situations. Cold storage facilities for dead body preservation are also available within the department.

We remain committed to excellence in forensic medicine, academic enrichment, and medico-legal service delivery.
