Department of Biochemistry, Jorhat Medical College & Hospital

Welcome to the official page of the Department of Biochemistry at Jorhat Medical College & Hospital, Jorhat, Assam. Established in October 2009, the department was initially led by Professor Dr. Ranadeep Kumar Mahanta. The first batch of MBBS students was inducted in 2010, marking the beginning of an era of academic excellence. Over the years, the department has grown significantly and now operates at full capacity with a dedicated team comprising one Professor, two Associate Professors, two Assistant Professors, and four Demonstrators. In 2013, Dr. Saurabh Borkotoky assumed the role of Professor and Head, serving until 2019. Since December 2020, Professor Anju Barhai Teli has been leading the department.

From its inception, the Department of Biochemistry has made remarkable progress, evolving into one of the most dynamic departments within the institute. Currently, it comprises nine faculty positions and two postgraduate trainees—a program initiated in 2014. The department is equipped with well-furnished undergraduate and postgraduate laboratories and is efficiently supported by laboratory technicians, assistants, office staff, and research scientists.

Beyond undergraduate education, the department plays an active role in postgraduate integrated seminars in collaboration with other departments. It has been a key contributor to the paramedical course since its introduction in 2012 and the Bachelor in Physiotherapy (BPT) course under Women’s University, which commenced in 2015.

To foster academic excellence and innovation, the department has been awarding a running trophy since 2018 for the Best Scientific Model Making, in honor of Late Professor Ganesh Chandra Baruah, recognizing his contributions to the field of Biochemistry. Keeping pace with advancements in medical science, the department’s faculty members are actively engaged in multidisciplinary intra-mural research in collaboration with various departments of Jorhat Medical College & Hospital.

The Department of Biochemistry is a cornerstone of the hospital’s laboratory services, functioning as part of the Biochemistry Wing of the Central Clinical Laboratory (CCL). It provides round-the-clock laboratory support for all specialties within the hospital. In addition to routine clinical biochemistry tests, the department has introduced specialized diagnostic tests, including the Cardiac Panel, Tumor Markers, and Fertility Panel, since August 2019.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the department played a crucial role in patient care and management. Our laboratory provided essential tests such as IgG for plasma donation, D-dimer, LDH, and Quantitative CRP. Notably, the department initiated Fast Track Investigations for COVID-19 patients under the leadership of Dr. Mainak Roy, Associate Professor, an effort that significantly enhanced patient management during the first wave of the pandemic.

The Department of Biochemistry remains committed to excellence in education, research, and clinical services, continuously striving to advance medical knowledge and healthcare delivery.
